about

Pyrolatria Midwestia is a String Quartet composed for highSCORE Festival 2017. It was performed by Quartetto Indaco in Pavia, Italy.

Pyrolatria = worship of fire

The title refers to nostalgia for countless bonfires I attended growing up in the Midwest. The piece adopts guitar playing techniques that were common in music I listened to that came out of Illinois and other Midwestern states in the 90's/00's. This music brings back memories of those days and I tried to reflect that in this work. The piece also builds the way all of us idiot kids would build fires. A spark here, lighter fluid and newspaper there, a small explosion, and eventually a beautiful fire that burned out a little too quick.
